Offshore software development for Canadian businesses

Canadian development costs are pushed up by something unusual: local employers compete directly with US companies hiring Canadians remotely and paying in USD. That keeps senior salaries elevated and hiring cycles long, and it is why Canadian agency delivery typically costs three to four times an experienced offshore team.

Working with founders and small businesses in Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Calgary, Ottawa, Waterloo, Edmonton and Halifax.

Time zones

~4 hours of daily overlap with Eastern Time

We work a shifted day of roughly 12:30pm–10:30pm IST, staying online until about 1pm Eastern. Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal get around 4 hours of real overlap each morning; Vancouver gets about 2, so an early call plus disciplined written updates works best there. Work you brief in your afternoon progresses overnight.

How the week runs

  • A working demo you can click through, every week
  • Written updates on what shipped, what is next, what is blocked
  • A call inside your working hours whenever you want one
  • Questions answered the same day, not overnight

What is different about building here

These are the details generic advice misses, and they are far cheaper to design in than to retrofit.

Bilingual English and French

The requirement most often underestimated. Federally regulated businesses and anyone operating in Quebec generally need French, and the Charter of the French Language requires it to be at least as prominent as other languages. Build it in from the start — retrofitting language switching means rework across routing, content, SEO and every template. Budget roughly 25–35% more.

PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25

PIPEDA applies federally; Quebec Law 25 is stricter and applies if you serve Quebec residents, including a privacy impact assessment before transferring personal information outside Quebec. We host in Canadian cloud regions and work against anonymised data, which resolves most of the concern.

AODA accessibility

Ontario requires WCAG 2.0 AA compliance for many organisations, and the Accessible Canada Act applies federally. We build to WCAG 2.1 AA as standard.

Sales tax is genuinely complex

GST/HST federally, plus PST in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and QST in Quebec — different rates and rules by province. We use automated tax tooling rather than hand-coded rules.

Working together

How a Canada engagement actually works

You pay in CAD, at a fixed price

An itemised quote with milestone payments, quoted in Canadian dollars so there is no currency guesswork.

Canadian hosting where it matters

AWS Canada Central, Azure Canada or Google Montréal, so data residency is satisfied while the team works remotely against anonymised data.

NDA before you share anything

Signed before you send us documents, designs or data, with data-handling terms that address PIPEDA and Law 25 obligations.

You own the result

Full IP assignment and source code transferred on completion, in your own repositories and accounts.

FAQ

Questions Canada clients ask

How much does it cost to hire offshore developers from Canada?

Canadian agency delivery typically costs three to four times an experienced offshore team for equivalent, well-scoped work. A website that runs CAD 11,000–40,000 with a Canadian agency is usually CAD 2,200–8,000 offshore. We quote fixed prices in CAD.

Can you build a bilingual English and French website?

Yes, and we build it bilingual from the start rather than translating afterwards — retrofitting language switching means rework across routing, content management, SEO structure and every template. Budget roughly 25–35% above a single-language build, and we use qualified translators rather than machine translation, which reads poorly in Quebec particularly.

How do you handle PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25?

Both permit processing outside Canada with appropriate contractual safeguards. The pattern we use is hosting in a Canadian cloud region while the development team works remotely against anonymised or synthetic data — hosting location and developer location are separate decisions. Data-handling terms go in the contract, and we recommend confirming your obligations with a privacy adviser.

What are the working hours compared to Canadian time zones?

We work a shifted day of roughly 12:30pm–10:30pm IST, staying online until about 1pm Eastern. Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal get around 4 hours of daily overlap; Vancouver around 2. Feedback given in your afternoon is actioned overnight.

Who owns the code and intellectual property?

You do. The contract includes full IP assignment, and source code, designs and accounts are transferred to you on completion.
